OpenVPN tunnel status

Hello,

I am trying to find a way to know the openvpn tunnel status, like if the tunnel is up and here i dont mean the tunnel endpoints but actually the connection between the endpoints. Is there a way to get that information in the status file?

I know that "Initialization Sequence Completed" in /var/log/messages indicates that the tunnel connection is up. But there should be a way to know it from some other place than logs?

Also i tried openvpn option "--status-version", the different values doesnt change the format of the status file.

this can be found by using the management interface, or by pinging the remote endpoint
