avahi-autoipd breaks openvpn client routes

I had avahi-autoipd 0.6.23-3lenny2 puled in by some package I installed. My tunnel that I used with Thunderbird would only work for about 60sec before quiting. Confusing symptom made it very hard to debug .. ( Debugging took me a full day - couldn't see anything in the logs. )

I was running this with openvpn 2.1.3-2
and
network-manager-openvpn 0.3.2svn2855-1.1

hope this post ill save others time.
