Getting started on Hyper-V

Post by AliTodd » Tue Nov 23, 2010 2:31 pm

Hi

My general requirements are that I want to connect to my office windows network from home, specifically to configure servers and use a source control repository.

I really don't need anything complicated. Current setup is:

1. a wireless router connected to the WAN (i understand i will need to port forward VPN requests, i can do this ok)
2. a Windows 2008 R2 server hard-wired into the router with a fixed MAC to IP address
3. running a plain old workgroup, but may extend to AD later.

I found OpenVPN yesterday and have been struggling with it since, flaying around blindly in the dark. I've managed to install the VM ok, which immediately complained about no network. I managed to work out how to configure the network to prevent DHCP and hard-code a (random) IP address.

I've hit a number of brick walls.

1. I cant browse the VPN app from the (random) ip address from the host server.
2. what the heck is this VM? Is it a pure ubuntu image? i've tried to install some packages e.g. KDE & Gnome in order to browse locally, but every package and every command i try to run i get a not found or not installed error message. (total linux virgin here). Where are these things and how to I get them?

Any help getting this setup would be appreciated
