OpenVPN Client - MTU

We have a particular segment if the network where we cannot go over 1500 MTU and are setting connection issues with some of our software over the VPN that seem related to them wanting to use the full 1500 but because of VPN overhead, they cannot. Is this just as simple as adjusting the MTU on the TAP Adapter to meet the 1500 - 22 for VPN? sort of fix?

Normally in the network we've been just setting things to 1522 to allow for the overheard...
