portable vpn client

Post by lt72884 » Tue Dec 10, 2019 3:04 am

Hello:) my question feels off-topic but yet related. I hope this is a decent place to post it.

I am trying to access my file(s) at home from public computers. I would like to use a vpn solution. I was told there is a portable openvpn client, or at least a portable vpn client? is this true? if so, i would like to learn how to set this up for my windows 10 machine at home:)

thanks

There is Openvpn and that is all you need.

There is no "Portable" openvpn client.

I would offer a link but you can surely click some for yourself

So if there is no portable vpn client like the serverfault forums are telling me, then how do i connect to my PC from anywhere, such as a public PC at a library that i do not have admin rights to install any drivers etc?

thanks

a reply to my post a few hours ago at serverfault/superuser

Don't write off VPN so easily. If you want reliable and versatile way to open connections on any port in any direction from anywhere including public places and networks with security restrictions, VPN is a go-to solution. Several comments here:

You don't need to install software to run it. You can find VPN clients that can be run without installations (portable *.exe file)

You don't connect. You cannot use openvpn in such circumstances ..

Edit: You know, you could ask your library to install openvpn for you, that would work. And hey, it's a library, they are all for freedom of speech, right ?

Have a nice day

Some years ago there was a "Portable Openvpn Project" but it has long since been abandoned.

OpenVPN now follows the normal security conscious model, you must have administrator rights to install it.

Open VPN is portable
All you need is a VPN service (paid) from a trusted VPN provider

OpenVPN is not a "Portable app".

For details of what a portable app is try a search ...
