[Solved] OVPN tunnel disconnects then reconnects

Post by jmbjmbjmb » Sat Mar 05, 2016 12:54 am

Hi,
I have a problem with one machine on a network becoming unreachable/then reachable.

Let me paint the picture.

I have an asterisk phone system running on an Intel NUC on a customer's lan. You can establish an OVPN tunnel to this machine but it will disconnect after a random interval, stay disconnected for a period of time then reconnect again.
To aid with troubleshooting, i have deployed another identical NUC onto the lan, setup OVPN on a different port and this machine is reachable 24/7 with no disconnects. Should be easy to find the problem.....not so far !

Both NUC's were created from the same image (its our standard one, in use at >100 sites)
Both NUC's live in the same subnet (192.168.13.xxx) and behind the same router.
UDP 61195 is forwarded to one machine (the reliable one) and UDP 61194 is forwarded to the troublesome one
The troublesome one is connected behind a Mikrotik RB260G switch that does some port-based vlanning to to the ITSP. All other traffic goes via the 192.168.13.xxx subnet. All the IP phones (this is a small call-centre) connect off the same switch as the reliable NUC and have no lan connectivity issues. This traffic is forwarded through the Mikrotik, so it would appear that this isn't the problem.

There are no signs of lan connectivity issues anywhere. As i said this is a call centre that runs 24/7, so if we had phones unregistering or not being contactable, someone would have been on my case by now. All the agent's internet traffic is from the 192.168.13.xxx lan as well, so once again, it is not likely that their internet connection (fibre) is an issue.

Remote connection to this NUC from any other internet connection shows the same issue, so its not a remote end connection issue either.

I would welcome any suggestions as to what i can try and any fault finding techniques that can be used.

I will attach a Client log file of a session today that shows an initiated session that connects, stays up for a while, then disconnects and reconnects again
Connection established 08:17:58
Ping response to 192.168.13.13 (troublesome NUC) is lost at 08:58:25
Client reports timeout at 09:00:25
Ping response is back qt 09:18:25
Client reports reconnection at 09:18:29
Ping response lost at 11:28:25
Client reports timeout 11:30:25
Ping response back 11:38:25
Client reports reconnect 11:23:28

It'll go on like this for ever.

Also attached are the Server and Client configs

Cheers

Jon

Hi,

Seems .txt files are not allowed as attachments. I'll have to find another way to upload the log & configs.

# To assign specific IP addresses to specific
# clients or if a connecting client has a private
# subnet behind it that should also have VPN access,
# use the subdirectory "ccd" for client-specific
# configuration files (see man page for more info).

# EXAMPLE: Suppose the client
# having the certificate common name "Thelonious"
# also has a small subnet behind his connecting
# machine, such as 192.168.40.128/255.255.255.248.
# First, uncomment out these lines:
;client-config-dir ccd
;route 192.168.40.128 255.255.255.248
# Then create a file ccd/Thelonious with this line:
# iroute 192.168.40.128 255.255.255.248
# This will allow Thelonious' private subnet to
# access the VPN. This example will only work
# if you are routing, not bridging, i.e. you are
# using "dev tun" and "server" directives.

# EXAMPLE: Suppose you want to give
# Thelonious a fixed VPN IP address of 10.9.0.1.
# First uncomment out these lines:
;client-config-dir ccd
;route 10.9.0.0 255.255.255.252
# Then add this line to ccd/Thelonious:
# ifconfig-push 10.9.0.1 10.9.0.2

# Suppose that you want to enable different
# firewall access policies for different groups
# of clients. There are two methods:
# (1) Run multiple OpenVPN daemons, one for each
# group, and firewall the TUN/TAP interface
# for each group/daemon appropriately.
# (2) (Advanced) Create a script to dynamically
# modify the firewall in response to access
# from different clients. See man
# page for more info on learn-address script.

The client device can be any machine and the result is the same.

dhcp-option WINS 8.8.4.4
What is for sure is that Google won`t do WINS for you ;)

Hi,

Problem is resolved.
Host had a second default gateway with the same metric set on a vLan so we had almost a "load balancing" thing going on where the return ping packets were not necessarily coming back on the path they went in on !

First principles everytime.....

Thanks to everyone who looked at the logs etc.

Cheers
