OpenVPN No Longer Works "OpenVPN core error : polarssl..."

I've been a user of OpenVPN Connect for quite a while now but as of a few months ago, the app no longer works. I changed nothing. I haven't downloaded any other apps or made any changes to my phone in the time frame that this problem cropped up. I suppose an update did this as I have automatic updates on. I get the following error anytime I try to connect:

OpenVPN core error : polarssl_digest_error: NONE: not usable

This just happened suddenly and I don't know why. I tried uninstalling the app and reinstalling. I tried redownloading the OpenVPN profiles from IronSocket but nothing has worked. Can anyone help me out? The OpenVPN software on Windows works flawless for me and I never have any problems. So any advice? Or alternatives that I can use until this works again?

I'm on a Sony Xperia Z2 with Android 4.4.4. Using OpenVPN Connect 1.1.16 (build 74), OpenVPN core 3.0.3 android armv7athumb2 32-bit

Can anyone help with this? I've been extremely patient and have waited several months to see if this topic would get a reply from anyone. I would greatly appreciate any help.

You could try OpenVPN for Android by Arne Schwabe.

Two times I've seen now that also tethering on Android 5.1.1 doesn`t work with OpenVPN Connect.
Arne Schwabe`s App was the solution in both cases.
