iMessage will not connect?

I'm having the issue that my iMessage will not send messages when on the VPN, both for WiFI and Cellular. I've tried changing DNS resolution settings, as well as Layer 2 forwarding, and Seamless mode, but nothing seems to help. On occasion, it will start working briefly, but as soon as the VPN reconnects it stops working, and defaults back to SMS:s. Any ideas why this may be happening? Exactly the same VPN config on my Mac lets iMessage work there. Any ideas?
