OpenVPN on demand

I'm looking to use OpenVPN on my home server or NAS and to make a secure connection from my android devices. Mostly for backup reasons. However, if I get it right, the standard OpenVPN apps creates a connection, but leave it connected. I'm not sure what this would do to battery and bandwidth usages, but it sounds bad that my VPN is connected 24/7 while I only needed one time a day (to perform the backup). So, is there a way to have my Open VPN connection connected on demand? And then terminated after a given time of inactivitiy? I already read that there is such function on iOS, but I did not yet came across something like this for android. Thanks.
