Hi Folks! I have a project under way in which I'd like to create a private network across the Internet for the purpose of managing things remotely. I'm not quite sure if OpenVPN would be the right fit for my application.
Here's the goal ...
I'd like to create a VPN network of machines so I can simply login to the VPN and manage whatever devices happen to be on the network remotely. I know, it sounds simple and not too complicated. Here's the trick for me. I want those machines that use this VPN to route 99% of their traffic through whatever ISP they currently have. However, I want ONE application (the server application of choice) to be connected to the VPN. So, when I call that server application up using the local IP of the VPN that has been assigned to that machine, it simply comes right up.
What steps should I take (or be thinking about) to make just that one application route it's traffic through the VPN and allow the rest of the traffic to run through it's normal ISP. Is that even possible? I feel certain it is, but I just don't know how I would go about this. Hamachi does a wonderful job of this, but quite honestly, I don't need all that GUI interface.
Is OpenVPN Right For My Project?
