OpenVPN auto-connect on web authenticated WIFI networks

Post by alex-khokhlov » Wed May 22, 2013 1:29 pm

Dear OpenVPN developers!

Here is a problem I can't solve without OpenVPN android client modifications.

I've set up an auto-login profile on my Android phone to my OpenVPN AS and everything is working fine until I connect to a Free WiFi network with web authentication requiring some action (like pressing a single button or something else). Every time I stumble upon this kind of WiFi network OpenVPN client fails to connect with an error "bad packet size" (or something like that) and stops any further attempts to reconnect. When this happens my android goes to wifi/internet without any VPN. And this is not good since I would like to create a "mandatory always-on VPN" solution.

What I expect OpenVPN client to do is to signal about a non-recoverable problem to me but still not allow any connection to the internet. I do understand that this will block any ability for WiFi web authentication, but for me it is more important to preserve VPN channel requirement than allow non-VPN access to some open WiFi network.

Please update OpenVPN android client to block any access to internet until a VPN channel is up and running (when appropriate setting is set), even in a situation with a failed networking stack.

Best regards, Khokhlov Alexander.
