Windows shares disappear from LAN when OpenVPN is connected

Post by Spiken » Sat Sep 15, 2012 2:49 pm

Hello!

I have a small home LAN consisting of a number of clients and a central server. This server has a VPN connection since a few days back and only yesterday it became apparent that all the windows shares on the server had become unreachable. After a little tinkering I concluded that it was due to the VPN client.

Watching 'Network & Sharing Center' when initiating the VPN, it became apparent that the VPN client automatically disables 'Network Discovery' and 'File Sharing'.

This is very inconvenient so I started looking for a solution somewhere on the internet, but after much browsing around I have realized that my knowledge of networking and computers doesn't allow me to discern if I'm reading something that is related to my problem or not, hence this post.

The OS the OpenVPN client is running on is server 2008.

Any help would be hugely appreciated. Thanks!
