configuring server on public IP

hi,

I'm new at using openvpn and am trying to set up an openvpn access server to access network drives off-network. I can successfully set up the server using my private ip and connect to it on my network. however this is (clearly) not very useful. i set up port forwarding for port 443 on this network, which if my understanding is correct, forwards traffic to/from public_ip:443 to private_ip:443?

Now i'm a little confused how to set up the vpn on my public ip. When i use the public ip as the hostname in the server config gui i can't connect using the client. I've tried using a hostname and just the ip. i'm unsure what to try next as i thought i would be able to serve it on my public ip and then connect using that address in the client?

Any help is appreciated!f

edit: additionally i would like to be able to ssh into different machines on the private network using a different network - not sure how complicated this is, if it involves port forwarding 22 or what... but i kinda need the vpn to connect first.
