How to improve OpenVPN performance for low ping

I am trying to reduce the lag in multiplayer games. With support from DigitalOcean, I installed OpenVPN on my Lightsail server. I have a stable connection with my own server when the VPN is off. When the VPN is on, the connection is unstable. I changed the server.conf settings like the configuration of NordVPN, but nothing changed. OpenVPN working on Ubuntu 16.04.
