mobileconfig not importing correctly on latest iOS Version

In the past the mobile config file would install the profile on the device which would then register inside the openvpn connect app.

After this the user could connect to the openvpn connection without issue or without importing all certs and ovpn files via itunes.

However we are trying to use the same method on a new ipad running latest iOS version and app and its not working.

Using the same mobileconfig file as always it installs the profile but nothing is registered inside the openvpn connect app.

Any ideas?

Just today I imported .ovpn config files to iOS Connect app and works correctly (iOS 13.3 and Open VPN 3.1.1).

Yes ive created a work around for now using a reconfigured ovpn file.

However this issue is for mobileconfig files. I use mobileconfig files to enable vpn on demand.

I can't reproduce this. I installed OpenVPN Connect 3.1.1.(2819) on an iPad (5th gen) freshly updated to 13.3. Using a known, previously-working mobileconfig created in Apple Configurator, I was able to confirm that the profile is present in the OpenVPN app GUI, and that VPN-on-demand rules specified on the config automatically establish the VPN when the specified hostname pattern is accessed.

Are you using a mobileconfig you had previously tested as working?

Yes the same mobileconfig file thats always worked. It installs the profile at a device level but doesnt register inside the OpenVPN connect gui. No idea whats going on.

Looks to be an iOS 12 issue with how it installs mobileconfig files from an email

iOS 9 and 10 are installing the same mobileconfig file without any issues and it shows up in the OpenVPN gui

Im going to test iOS 13

Just test same versions as above but via email (native mail via Exchange/ActiveSync) profile delivery. Same behavior. Worked as expected.

Maybe a localised issue with my own version. However this issue came to us directly from a client so they are seeing the same behaviour.

Looking online it looks like the identifier changed for later versions so im going to test this apprach as mines using the older openvpn connect identifier.

A Hail Mary, but you might journal the process with the device connected to Configurator ans see if anything useful is logged.

I have net.openvpn.connect.app as the Identifier and Provider Bundle Identifier empty.
