VPN says to work but doesn't...?

I recently configured my own openVPN server to hide my IP while I'm abroad. The configuration went smoothly, with no problems showing up in configuring the server and the iOS device.
The iOS device says to be connected to VPN in settings as well as in the openVPN app; I even get the little VPN badge next to the wi-fi indicator. However, when I go to whatismyipaddress.com it will show my actual IP instead of my home IP, and I just got an add injection from a free wi-fi network. Help?
