OpenVPN Bug (S6 Custom ROM)

Hello all,
I have flashed XtreStoLite Odex Pure 2.0 to my Galaxy S6 (G920T). I really love the ROM, and it obviously has it's issues, but that's not what I'm concerned about right now. I have installed OpenVPN and upon trying to connect, I get an error message: "Android Bug: Sorry, due to a known bug in this version of Android (In my case 5.1.1), it is not possible to gain permission to open a VPN tunnel."

Could this be bypassed using root? Otherwise I'll be very disappointed. I 'require' my VPN on all of my devices, as I have had issues with being DOXed and DDoSed. My security is my main priority. Otherwise, I'll just flash the stock rom and deal with all the lag.
