disconnects(conditionally) when device goes to sleep

the app disconnects when the device is going into sleep mode which is an undesired effect when downloading larger files.
Exception: The connect app is active AND running in the foreground window, then the connection is not interrupted during the sleep periode. How can I manage this?

Automatic start after reboot works fine. I am using Android 5.1
