OSX: Method for setting up IP routes used by OpenVPN

I am wondering how does open vpn set up routes. Is it done using route command? Where is the code?

The reason is that I am testing inter operability of Cisco Anyconnect with Open VPN for split tunneling and it appears open vpn fails to add any routes if anyconnect is running.

any help will be appreciable. Is there a way we can configure openvpn to unlock routing table if it is locked?
