Super Stupid Question I have to ask...

Post by jamilmereck » Thu Sep 10, 2015 7:46 pm

OK....so i've been wanting to connect remotely to my home Mac pro on 10.6 for a while now but have never really tried it....I keep hearing VPNs (if you can set up for free) are the way to go...So i've done this...set up the comp with a vpn set to openvpn specifications for US servers...i also have the openvpn connect app on my iphone...and on both i can connect successfully...

But here's the stupid question....

Now what? How do i access (literally, needing step by step i think, until it clicks for me) So i'm connected, say on my iphone via openvpn connect...status connected...but then where do i go in order to now access the various things from my mac at home?

I've seen that to do screen sharing i'd need another app like a VNC app, so downloaded that too...but it seems to have nothing to do with openvpn connect....so i'm still very confused as to how this all comes together,....still a newbie on this front....

So say i want to access files on my home comp...what steps would i take?

does the home comp need to be connected to vpn for me to access from phone? I just am kind of lost at this point...hopefully this question, in it's utter ignorance and lack of any experience, will make sense still to someone out there that can help hand hold me through accessing the stuff on my home comp and helping me understand when do i need open vpn connect versus vnc client and what is tunnel-whatever-it's-called used for?...

Sorry guys...hopefully you don't mind the complete lack of understanding and knowledge on this stuff and are willing to help me change that :-)

Again comp at home is a Intel mac pro (i think still 32-bit) running 10.6.1 i think....and my iphone, just as an example is a 5 on ios 8.4.1,

ultimately, once i have a grasp on this, i'd like to also be able to access similarly from my computer at work which is a windows 7 pc....so yeah...help! :-) lol It would be greatly appreciated!

This is what the documentation is written for .. dive in:
https://openvpn.net/index.php/open-sour ... ation.html

There is a useful HOWTO right at the top of the list.

This may also help:
