How to enable VPN without application?

Post by fSeka » Thu Sep 18, 2014 6:51 am

Hi,

if a try to enable VPN directly from the settings menu I receive the following message "To connect use OpenVPN app" :(
But if I go to settings -> general -> VPN, I can slide to connect without going through the OpenVPN app and it's working.
Strange isn't it?

Can someone explain me what I did wrong?

I have an autologin profile.

Many thanks in advance and kind regards

Do you experience disconnects after some minutes when you connect this way?

I also cannot do so. Used to be able to connect in "Settings" app directly using VPN on demand profile. When you've only 1 VPN profile of any kind the switch will appear directly in the "Settings" app and you don't need to go further in. With that now I couldn't connect (have the same error message).

If you've 2 or more VPN profile, it works but you'd need to go into the "VPN" page in the settings app before you can turn it on.

I am having the same problem on iOS 8.0.2 / iPhone 6.

I have added the Openvpn connection through Apple Configurator, so I can use the VPN on Demand, but I cannot connect directly through settings or really connect on demand, I get the message "To connect using [profile] use OpenVPN application"

I can connect if I go through Settings -> General -> VPN and it connects successfully.

If I get the same configuration and make it an ovpn connection, I am able to connect to the server directly from the Settings switch. Apple configurator (mobileconfig) is not working for the switch in Settings and the On Demand connection is not working (not connecting when opening a certain domain).

Also when trying to connect to the domain, specified in the OnDemand section in the mobileconfig, the browser gives me "Unable to connect to website" for a brief moment and then it connects fine. I suppose it tries to fire the VPN connection but it gets an error like when trying to connect through settings and then drops the VPN connection completely and opens it without VPN.

Same thing here

When I'm adding .mobileconfig file (created with iPhone Conf Util with custom ssl options for openvpn) I can't turn on VPN in settings, even from settings->general->vpn it says "Use OpenVPN Connect app". But in OpenVPN Connect app it's disconnected and switch is disabled and I can't even slide it

Any suggestions?

Thanks

iOS 6.1

The same as above, tested it with devices;
  • iOS 7.1.2 everything works like a charm
  • iOS 8.0 BETA the above problems occurs, it does work by going to settings -> general -> VPN, I can slide to connect
  • iOS 8.0 the above problems occurs, it does work by going to settings -> general -> VPN, I can slide to connect
  • iOS 8.0.2 the above problems occurs, it does work by going to settings -> general -> VPN, I can slide to connect
  • iOS 8.1 BETA the above problems occurs, it does work by going to settings -> general -> VPN, I can slide to connect
  • iOS 8.1 the above problems occurs, it does work by going to settings -> general -> VPN, I can slide to connect
I run openVPN 1.0.5 build 177 on iPhones 5, 5c, 5s, 6 and plus, iPad 2, 3, 4 and Air at the moment.
I recently talked with an Apple Sr. engineer and showed the error, he thinks it has to do with an API that is new from iOS 8.0 and up
that isn't being used by openVPN....

I hope this will help you guys to update with an fix, it's been a while since iOS 8.x.x was made public.... (not counting the BETA time).

I find it sad that there's no (visible) advancement in this issue.
Just tested the iOS 8.2 BETA on a iPhone 5c, 6 plus and iPad Air, problem still occurs.

Is there any (!?) update from the developers since no one is responding in this thread or other where this problem is also being posted...

yes you can, setting up L2TP VPN connection on your device http://www.vpnanswers.com/how-to-setup- ... windows-8/ instead of downloading applications. You can use L2TP connection on your desktop, laptop or hand device with high encryption and security.

For me it seems to be fixed with iOS 8.3 and it is working OK from the slider in Settings.

Can somebody else confirm that iOS 8.3 fixes this issue?
