Sharing VPN connection over wifi to desktop, help please :)

Post by XAXAXIK » Fri May 31, 2013 8:26 pm

Hi everybody, am very new here, however using VPN for couple of months now.

My problem is: my VPN connection is perfect, am looking for help with configuration on my home network. As you can see on picture I am behind ADSL router (Netgear DGND3700). Desktop PC is connected via LAN cable. Laptop is connected over wifi. VPN works on both devices no problem. What I want to do is, have OpenVPN client running on my laptop using wifi connection to my router and SHARE the VPN connection to my desktop PC. Picture of my network:

I am able to set this scenario via setting up wireless access point on my laptop with shared VPN connection and being wirelessly connected from my desktop PC to this AP. However I am not able then connect to FTP server running on same IP as the VPN server, neither acces the website on same IP address - I AM ABLE do both from laptop, but not from shared VPN connection on my desktop...

The laptop has to stay mobile, so can not use the LAN cable.

Any ideas? Thx in advance!

this is more of a routing issue than an OpenVPN issue; it depends on the OS of your laptop how you can achieve this; on Windows, use Internet Connection Sharing to share the VPN connection with other your desktop PC; on Linux, use some iptables magic to achieve the same.

again, not really an OpenVPN issue; I'd try to get RRAS working on the laptop - but I'm no windows routing expert.
