Sending data without port forwarding?
Hi,
So far, I have been testing OpenVPN and it works well. I am able to create tunnels and send messages within my home network, but if I have to send a message from my location to location B's network, I have to enable port forwarding for my network and location B's network. I understand that port forwarding is needed but is there a way send data to location B's network using any routing techniques that is supported by OpenVPN, given the recipient's external IP address and their IP address within the network?
Thanks and looking forward to your response.
Mike

if i say that i undestand what you are saying ,i am lying...
f.e ,what is a "message"?
can you use more "technical" terms of what you want to do?

Re: Sending data without port forwarding?

Here is a scenario, there are two LANs. I am using a computer with an IP address of 192.168.1.100 within LAN A. The other network is LAN B where my friend is and he is using a computer with an IP address of 192.168.1.125. I want to send him a message saying "Hello, This is a message using OpenVPN", so I create the tunnel using the command line arguments and my friend does the same. We cannot establish the tunnel because we are both within our respective LAN so to resolve this, we have configure our respective routers to enable port forwarding on port 1198 where we plan to communicate on. Once we configure the routers to enable port forwarding, I try to establish a tunnel with my friend in LAN B and we are successful. Now I am able to send my message to him using the assigned VPN IP addresses via UDP. But what if I wanted to send my friend a message without configuring the routers to enable port forwarding? Are there any features in the command line argument to allow communication from one LAN to another without port forwarding?
Hope this explanation helps.
Mike.

Re: Sending data without port forwarding?
in openvpn one side is the client and the other is the server....
client must connect to server somehow...meaning that one side must forward ports to server,
but
if you have a third point that can act as the server, you can configure your pcs as clients and
see each other via the server...

Re: Sending data without port forwarding?
Ok, but it is inevitable to enable port forwarding on the routers if data is sent from one internal IP address to another?

vpn's are used to connect 2 lans or a client over insecure medium (internet) and transmit
data encrypted so others cant read them...
what exactly do you want to do?

Re: Sending data without port forwarding?
I want to implement a p2p model where the both parties are in two different local area networks, like the example in the previous thread, and I don't have to enable port forwarding to allow the connection to go through. If there are 5 VPN connections running simultaneously, I have to port forward 5 ports on my router plus port forward 5 ports on the recipients router. Is there a solution to bypass this?
Thanks for your help.

Re: Sending data without port forwarding?
what previous thread??like the example in the previous thread,
one side is server and other is client,I have to port forward 5 ports on my router plus port forward 5 ports on the recipients router.
for the server side you need to port forward one port to your openvpn server,
the client connects to the server (outgoing traffic) and there is no need to port
forward anything to your client,if you want 5 clients to connect to a single server
only one port/protocol is needed...
