Failover/Load Balancing via two ISPs for online gaming

Post by m_elias » Mon Oct 22, 2012 3:58 pm

I understand OpenVPN can be setup for automatic failover but I don't know if it is seemless enough for online RTS gaming. Here's my situation, I am using a Xincom dual WAN router to load balance two DSL connections. I do some online gaming with friends about once a week and sometimes I get frequent ISP disconnects which leads to a lot of frustration. So I'm looking for a hosted VPN service that will allow me to open two tunnels, one through each ISP, that will allow my computer's internet connection appear as the same IP regardless of which tunnel is active. I think I can probably live with a few seconds of delay which switching between tunnels but what I envision is a system that sends all the data through both tunnels and the first packet to arrive is used, the 2nd is discarded. That way when one tunnel fails, the server still receives the data but only one copy and the online gaming service sees no interruption. I would prefer if I could specify which applications on my computer use the dual tunnels as only the game and maybe skype need to use it.

Does anyone know if such a service exists for my application? Or will I have to purchase a VPS service and set everything up myself with some custom programming?

Thanks,
Matt
