Jumping ping using OpenVPN

Post by james01 » Tue Aug 09, 2011 9:18 am

Hi,

Recently I switched from PPTP protocol to OpenVPN protocol with my VPN service provider.
I found that when using OpenVPN, my ping starts jumping from about 80 to 300+, back and forth when connecting to a server in my own country.
I then tried different VPN service providers to compare, but they gave the same result. So that means the problem should be on my end.

Do you have any clue on how to fix this? Are there specific settings I should adjust to using OpenVPN?

P.S. This is a comparison using OpenVPN and PPTP, tested on a server within my country (and using a VPN from within my country)

without details about your particular setup there is no way to tell - are you using bridging/tap mode ? if so, please try using tun mode. Which client OS is involved? On Windows 7 the performance of OpenVPN can be a bit erratic, esp in conjunction with IPv6, which OpenVPN does not support that well yet.
