Port forwarding for game server

Post by Nago » Sun Feb 18, 2024 10:14 pm

Hello all,

I tried to google this for a few days but haven't gotten anything to work yet.

So what I am trying to achieve is my on-prem server is running a dedicated game server that communicates off ports 15636-15637 TCP and UDP. That same server is an OpenVPN client to an Oracle Cloud VM with an OpenVPN server installed on it. The problem I am running into is I cannot port-forward those previously stated ports from the Cloud VM to the dedicated game server on-prem.

The furthest I got with this setup is the following:
  • packets for those ports are getting picked up by the OpenVPN server but are not being sent out to my on-prem server.
  • The VPN connection from the static IP address on the Client (on-prem) to the Server (Cloud VM) connects and can ping each other.
  • Ingress Rules on the Oracle Cloud have been set for each port range.
I don't want to put too much info in my first post so if more details are needed then please let me know.

I apologize if this question has been answered before as it did not show up in my search results.

To forward ports 15636-15637 from your Oracle Cloud VM to your on-prem dedicated game server via OpenVPN, ensure that security lists and firewall rules on the Cloud VM allow TCP and UDP traffic on these ports. Confirm that OpenVPN server settings correctly forward traffic, and verify routing on both the Cloud VM and on-prem server. If you need more specific steps or run into issues, let me know!

It sounds like you're on the right track with your OpenVPN setup. Have you checked the routing rules on your Cloud VM? Ensure that the OpenVPN server is configured to forward traffic to your on-prem server. You might also want to verify that the firewall settings on both the Cloud VM and your on-prem server allow traffic on ports 15636-15637 for both TCP and UDP. If you need more specific help, feel free to share your OpenVPN configuration!
