Open VPN showing my public ip

Post by buzzie59 » Tue Dec 20, 2022 5:05 pm

I set up Open VPN on my ASUS router and connected my devices as well, however, when I check their IP addresses they show the router's public IP address. How can that be? I don't think that's the way it should be. When I use NordVPN it connects to a different server with another IP, not mine.

Hi,

That is expected because your router running the OpenVPN server, to which your clients (NAS, Mac) connect, is the exit point.
When I use NordVPN it connects to a different server with another IP, not mine.

So what's the use of using Open VPN if it's not protecting my public address? Can you change it?

OpenVPN creates an encrypted tunnel between two networks. If one of those two networks is used as exit point towards the Internet, then the Internet will see its public IP as source.

If you don't want that, don't use your router as VPN server (instead use something like NordVPN or any other provider).
