Accessing local and remote networks simultaneously

Good morning. Please bear with me as I have no network experience, however I have successfully managed to configure a Raspberry pi as a VPN router by following instructions I found on the internet.

I have successfully tested the solution using the OpenVPN client on my laptop being able to access resources on my remote devices however there is a problem for which I need assistance in resolving.

It would appear that when using the OpenVPN client all network traffic is sent over the VPN link so that I lose access to resources on the local network.

Can anyone advise whether it is possible to configure the OpenVPN client to ignore traffic on the local network e.g. an exclusion of my local lan address range 192.168.*.* so that I can access both local and remote networks simultaneously.

Any assistance in resolving this issue would be gratefully received.
