tethering for unlimited data with Verizon

I'm currently using a droid with a verizon account with unlimited data. I know that I can tether if I formally use the Verizon tethering feature.
What I want to know is if the openVPN will be indistiguishable from ordinary data download (other than perhaps bigger data values) or if Verizon would be able to recognize, i.e. nick me for the tethering charge? Currently, there is a 5Gbyte limit if you are formally tethering, as I interpret the contract.
Thank you.

modern firewalls can easily pick out openvpn traffic from https or other types of encrypted traffic. Whether Verizon does so ... only one way to find out.

OpenVPN does not hide itself from firewalls, nor does it try to duck firewalls - that's up to the end-user/hacker ;)
