Securely access home network via VPN on public wifi?

How can you safely/securely setup Windows 7 so that you can securely access your home network while using OpenVPN over a public wifi?
I setup my home router with Tomato VPN and have setup OpenVPN on that router (as the server). And my laptop as the OpenVPN client. But I am not sure it is safely to access my home (homegroup) network on a public wifi using OpenVPN.
I'm thinking that this might be more of a Windows 7 setup issue. That you'd need to set your Windows 7 setting to allow public access to files. But if you do that, is it secure?
Is there a secure way to access your home network over your OpenVPN via public wifi connection? As if you were at home and using Windows Homegroup. Being able to read and write to allowed files.
