vpn traffic type

Hello.
My friend and I have a vpn between our machines. Recentely we tried to play games via it. Those games that have lan server discovery feature do not find my friend's server when its running - looks like there is some specific type of traffic used for that (e.g. broadcasting packages). "Connect to ip" option works perfectly if there is one. We tried both ethernet and ip tunneling modes (tun/tap). We also tried to disable firewalls for vpn connections - didn't help.
I though maybe you guys know what's going on? How do these things work and why they don't work with vpn? Can it be a problem in normal use (not for gaming) and how do you solve/bypass it if it can?
Thanks in advance.
P. S. Sorry about the topic name - I didn't know how to name this question better.
