OpenVPN is often referred to as an SSL-based VPN (or TLS-based) but it uses its own protocol which is very close to SSL/TLS; OpenVPN is not compatible with other VPN clients out there. For more details, read
http://openvpn.net/index.php/documentat ... rview.html

hi there,

just to add that other vpn protocols belong to different OSI layers as well..

but they all perform more or less the same function, encapsulation and encryption
some do better than others.
