Please save time by not flaming me for my stupidity and instead just give a link(s) or tip(s) on how to solve my problem. The search engine is useless to me because every search string is "too common". I tried installing Astrill 2.2.0 build 1829 and it will not work on OpenVPN mode. So far, even their senior techs are baffled. I then tried installing

But I still get "An error occurred installing the TAP device driver." and no joy.

The senior Astrill tech tried installing a new version of OpenVPN, but had the same result.
I have 2 different mfgr laptops, 1 yr old, running Win7 64bit and firefox, both up dated.

Sorry that I have certainly made mistakes, but I tried to do the best i can.

please try the 2.1.4 installer, which is the latest version.
Make sure the installer is run with elevated privileges.
If there is an error during installation try to copy the installation log from the installer and post it here.

Since we last spoke I have tried several things that did not work.

(It seems to be loading as a 32 BIT, is there a 64 BIT and I have just been barking up the wrong tree? I always get C:\Program Files (x86)\Astrill.

But here is what I have done so far.

I went to

I downloaded openvpn-2.1.4-install.exe again and used HashCalc to compare MD5s. About 8 or 10 times a year, when I download a file it gets slightly corrupted and used to cause nightmares when I used it. Now, I nearly always download everything twice and use HashCalc to compare MD5 etc.

I now catch the errors and re-download until I get 2 alike. The better websites provide the MD5 which saves me a lot of time if the file is large. I assume that the corruption is due to the poor WiFi networks that I use.

I ran openvpn-2.1.4-install.exe again and took a movie of the install. Same error. I did it yet again after first going to Properties, Compatibility, Change settings for all users, Run in compatibility mode for Windows Vista SP2, as Administrator.

Same result. Ditto in Safe Mode.

The Astrill Development tech asked me to:
boot into Safe Mode
then you will navigate to c:\Program Files (x86)\Astrill
and run install.bat file
I created it for you
you will just run it and please save any output
so I can see if there is any error
I hope it will have success in safe mode
maybe NOD is interfering (I am using ESET SmartSecurity 4.0.474.0 aka NOD)
but I really dont think so
we have users with NOD and it works just fine
so let me show how you will do it
1. Boot into Safe Mode
2. open CMD.EXE as administrator
3. cd to that folder
4. run install.bat

the current OpenVPN application is a 32bit program that comes with a 32bit and 64bit driver. On my Win 7 64bit box OpenVPN 2.1.4 runs fine.
As Openvpn is a 32bit program it is installed in c:\Program Files (x64)

The error you are seeing
GetLastError=1450
seems to suggest that there are insufficient resources to add a driver:

ERROR_NO_SYSTEM_RESOURCES Insufficient system resources exist to complete the requested service.

Does the box have enough RAM available at the time? enough disk space?
I must add that I have little experience in troubleshooting windows driver installation issues (which this ultimately is).

I've been too busy to fight with it for a while and pretty much still am. Thanks for the help. I still want to solve this and i thought that I'd better say something.

I have enough system resources IMHO. I seldom see more than 2GB of the 4GB RAM in use and my 500GB HDD has 146GB open. The Astrill tech wants me to remove ESET SmartSecurity 4 and try again in case that was 'protecting my computer' even though we'd 'turned everything off'.

ESET asks a zillion questions when you first install and configure it. So I had to wait for them to tell me how to save my configuration. And I am just very busy with many things in any case. But, I hope to try the above in the next few days, so please check back every couple of days if that is not a bother.

The Astrill tech even tried to install a 3rd kind of VPN and had the same type of error, so he was really trying to leave no stone unturned.

This is not meant as whining, just full disclosure.

I removed ESET, Astrill, & OpenVPN using Add Remove Programs. But, 20 min later found that one should NEVER use Add Remove Programs for ESET.

Then I installed Astrill astrill-setup-win Tested.exe, ver 2.2.0.1829 and it seemed to install fine and fast. No error messages.

I was having trouble over and over again reinstalling ESET. It would not set up a firewall, so, I took a big chance and got online anyway and tried logging into with the OpenVPN choice of Astrill. No luck. The OpenWEB worked fine, but not OpenVPN. It would not connect to any of the asterisk servers that I have tried.

I made a backup and then followed the removal method for ESET that uses Safe Mode.

I removed ESS/EAV/EMSX first. Then, NODv2

Then I installed ESS 4.2.71.2 ess_nt64_enu.msi and installed ESET yet again

But, there was no ESET in Start/All Programs. There is a folder C:\Program Files\ESET but it was empty.

I ran the Safe Mode removal tool again, but it said that there is nothing to remove. So I ran
4.2.71.2 ess_nt64_enu.msi again. That time it said that it was installing 18c792.msi. That seems to change every time.

ESET seemed to install OK this time.

But Astrill still will not connect to any of the asterisk servers that I have tried. It goes: Connecting, Authenticating, then Downloading Configuration but just for a few seconds and then the red OFF button appears. Is all of this because I do not know how to turn on OpenVPN?

Does anyone know how to see if the TAP Driver is there?

I have a Win XP laptop that I am planning to sell. I put Astrill on that and OpenVPN works!! I am glad to finally have a pleasant experience with it.

That Win XP laptop has ESET SmartSecurity ver 3.0.672.0 on it. When Astrill first started, ESET asked for two permissions. I granted them and I am good to go. I looked in the ESET 4.2.71.2 on this computer and all of the Astrill (1 place) & OpenVPN (2 places) are allowed in both directions.

Hmmm. For no apparent reason Astrill lost the connection to Los Angeles 1 after 20 min or so, but when I changed to Los Angeles 2, I got back on.
Wouldn’t it be great if someone came out with stuff that just worked? Microsoft certainly has not thought of that and if the OS is crud, how does the other stuff have a chance? Now the Mac users will laugh at our pain.

I ran ipconfig /all in the cmd window and got. Also, I had another problem and called the HP Tech Support. He looked around and suggested going to download OpenVPN ver 2.1_rc15 and manually install TAP driver ver 9.0.0.4. I have not looked at that yet. I'm still busy (seems a permanent condition for me.) <frown>

OK, the tap-win32 adapter is definitely not installed; I must say that I am a bit at a loss here: I've never ran into the situation where the tap driver fails to install with such an error....

The openvpn tapinstall.exe program is simply a renamed devcon.exe from the windows Driver Kit. Perhaps you can find some info onliny about devcon.exe to see if you can further troubleshoot this issue.

I've been scouring the internet for several hours now and have not found a resolution to this issue. Is someone still working on this? I'm getting the same error and have went through all these different steps to try and resolve and I just get the same error as stated by the OP.

If I try to remove the TAB device through Programs>OpenVPN>Utilities it removes fine but when I try to add it throws up an error saying that "C:\Windows\system32\drvstore.dll is either not designed to run on Windows or it contains errors"

I didn't see this error posted so I thought it might help. I have had success getting this running on other Windows 7 64bit systems in the past but this one has me stumped.

I also have a second issues on another Windows 7 64 bit install when the connection is started it complains that it can't find the TAP driver, the one I installed and named. I am 100% sure it is named the same as in the config but for some reason it says it can't find it.

I just got the same TAP-32 error with windows 7, using version 2.0.9 of openvpn.

Then I downloaded version 2.2.0, which was only released last week, and that worked.

The newer OpenVPN versions work. I've tried version 2.1.4 and it works on 64 bit. Follow the link and install the newest version

Cleaning out the "ghost" network interfaces with the tool at https://skydrive.live.com/redir?resid=8 ... PB4O4uVxek allowed us to install the TAP device driver without any further issues.

I know I'm bumping a 2 month old thread but this reallly works! Before my OpenVPN was working perfectly fine but then I installed Hotspotshield and I think Hotspot screwed up the TAP driver. When I came back to OpenVPN I couldn't connect to anything and I later found out it was because of the TAP driver. Tried almost everything everybody else mentioned (unistalling, reinstalling, use all these other misc utility files to try and reinstall the TAP driver). None of them worked until I found that quote above! That utility there WORKS! I created this account just for this post .

I'm having problems installing TAP with Windows 8 x64.

Have tried the fix listed, x86 installer, updating windows, and briefly disabling the firewall.

I have the same problem with my Windows Vista x64.
I have repaired my registry by myself. (ndis/iftypes/IfUsedNetLuidIndices changing)
But now i have a new problem. The log files attached.

I had this problem too, 2hrs spent on finding solution on Google = no success. Then I made it by myself.

My progress:
1. log in as Administrator
2. installed OpenVPN GUI (as Administrator) - with this error of course
3. regedit - searched for "openvpn" and deleted two keys (folders) - found another two file asociation keys but these leave them

5. removed all TAP adapters (using batch file)
6. restarted PC
7. installed four TAP adapters (using batch file)
8. removed "HomeUsers" group from Administrator account
9. restarted PC
ADAPTERS ARE INSTALLED

Hey! I had the same problem, tried to resolve it for 2 days with success and now I want to share my experience with you.

The problem for me was with Win 7 64bit trying to handle the security certificate during the installation of the Tap driver.

The installation program wasn't able to access Rundll32.exe to verify the security certificate.

What I did is whent to C:\Windows\System32\Rundll32.exe Right-click-Properties, click Security Tab and create a permission to access the file. Note that I do this from the administrator account.

Install OpenVpn and I hope it works for you too.

Wow am I tired of this problem...

Windows 7 home Premium 64 bit

Tried everything leading up to altering the permissions for rundll32.exe and am now stuck here, being unable to do this. Think I found the failed install event in Process Monitor; you can see the entries in the image below saying 'NAME NOT FOUND' 'Denied access,...'

I was unable to find 'C:\Windows\inf\setupapi.dev.log' or indeed any results beyond a partially named file 'setupapi.de'.

I started attempting to solve this problem as little above a novice and have now learned a bit about some advanced system tools and the Command Prompt (silver linings ). Maybe I am now being dense but I cannot find a way to change the permissions for the rundll32.exe file because the boxes are greyed out (assuming it would need Write permission in Administrators???) and yes I have looked for solutions.

Can anyone please help me? Thank you.
