OpenVPN on non-cellular iPad

Norton VPN is currently used on my iPad (non-cellular) and is mostly used via wifi within my LAN. If an OpenVPN client security certificate is installed any internet traffic will again pass through the OpenVPN tunnel, and hence secured when within my LAN. In this case will security protection still be afforded by OpenVPN when logging on to the internet via a remote wifi (eg local gym wifi)?
