after OpenVPN (open source) connects to a cradlepoint router/server i lose internet access

i have a cradlepoint router standalone with its own WAN/IP address. from a remote location, when i connect using OpenVPN (open source), i connect fine. but the windows 10 computer loses access to the internet. this was tested on 3 different makes and models of workstatoin and laptops. the OpenVPN connection is successful of course.
