I have a Mac laptop and a Mac desktop. When I’m at home, I can do Screen Sharing and File Sharing between them through my home LAN. I’m trying to use OpenVPN so I can to do so even when the laptop is off site.

I have created an OpenVPN Cloud profile and have installed Connect with that profile on both Macs. They can each successfully connect to the Cloud server. But when the laptop is off site it doesn’t see the desktop, even when both are connected to the Cloud server.

You probably need to set up the home machine as a "connector" to OpenVPN Cloud. See:
