Different IP address

HI all,
Im just setting up my Chromebook with OpenVPN. On the server side, I am using a Netgear router with the built in function.
I can connect successfully and browse the internet fine, however I cannot access any file shares.
On my home network, the IP given to local PC's is 192.168.1.xx
When the VPN is connected, it gives a IP range of 192.168.254.xx
As I understand, it uses a different subnet as I am connecting via TUN.
Any ideas on how I can change the config on the client side or otherwise to allow easy browsing of file shares.
Note that because the VPN server is running on my router, I dont have access to the server side config.
