Update Dynamic DNS from route-up script fails

Apparently you can not connect through the openvpn channel in route-up script. But what other option do I have? I do not want to place the script in cron. route-up script is called on connects/reconnects just after the IP changes and it could've been the best place for Dynamic DNS update script. What experienced administrators suggest?
