Local client Access

I am looking to setup an OpenVPN server on a router in front of my NAS and my desktop and mobile devices. I am very much a newbie in this area. My question: Does my desktop or mobile device have to install a VPN client? In either case, do I have to setup any routing or other configuration for those local clients?
