high ping on Mullvad app windows

i had a normalish ping on windows 10
then launched the mullvad app and the ping changed from 10 to 60.
whats going on? how can I bring it back to 10 or something more reasonable
also, when running the vpn app i cannot access my router. It says blocked. what can I do about this? The subnet has not changed on the LAN right? So why is it blocked.
