Gateway Group & Failover with redirect-gateway def1

So I'm having this problem with Openvpn that I can't figure out, if my VPN tunnel goes down and pfsense gateway monitor switches to my secondary gateway the Openvpn variable "redirect-gateway def1" is still in effect and is trying to route all traffic via the downed gateway. The only way for the redirect to secondary gateway to work is if I actually Disable the Openvpn server or remove the variable from config, then pfsense will finally route all traffic via the secondary working gateway. This seems like such an obvious thing that should of been thought of prior to adding openvpn into pfsense. Am I missing something here? I can't be the first person with this problem.
