OpenVPN Support Forum

I have been using OPENVPN since last 5-6 years, I use it for security and privacy. Other advantage of OPENVPN was it helped me watch geo blocked videos/shows/movies etc. I prefer to watch Indian content (not interested in Netflix)
But recently most of Indian websites (specially Hotstar) have started detecting VPN.
I have tried many ways out but did not work, definitely they are not blocking data centre IP addresses but blocking VPN data.
If this situation persist VPN will be a dead thing for streaming.
Can we have any solution to this, a guide or tutorial !!
Or we can't do it !!

Which VPN do you use ?

I have configured OPENVPN, used data centre VPS from Digitalocean, AWS, Linode, Azure
Currently have working vpn on Debian - Amazon lightsail - Mumbai
Never used vpn from commercial providers ( eg Express/Nord etc)

Hi all,
I saw how Smart DNS works, then I checked with websites which detect and block vpn traffic
Now my plan is to connect Client (myself) to OPENVPN server A, then server A connects to OPENVPN server B, so the file configuration will be
Client => Server A => Server B
Now on Server B we will disable - Should client Internet traffic be routed through the VPN - No
This process will make the handshake as normal https and if the website traces IP address or DNS - information will be from Server A (I am planning to keep both servers in same location)
My problem is how to connect Server A to Server B, both will be on Linux machines (Debian)
Please help me, if anybody has a easy step to step guide for this.

Amazon or CloudFlare .. if they are in the same location then what else do you need .. ?

i tried different options in AWS but still no luck, attached static IP's as well.

I found a trick, configured OPENVPN server on Raspberry Pi at my home and now can connect to my home network from any where and nobody can block me, as it gives a residential IP address.
All streaming websites have gone hard on data centre IP addresses, some may work for a while but eventually will get detected. Not good news for commercial VPN providers, even smart DNS proxies have now come under radar.

I am watching all OTT apps in India, with my VPN
It will work only if you have residential IP address, data centre IP addresses are all blocked.

Unfortunately, there is no guaranteed way to bypass geo-restrictions on streaming sites like Hotstar.

Residential IP address (from Jio/Airtel/Tata etc) guarantee it works

I tried the same too with digital ocean but fail to connect. I am planning to switch to residential IP in India. I have a question reg the setup. can you help me if this is correct steps.

1. Install the ubuntu os in raspberry pi
2. Open router settings and assign static ip for this Pi device
3. Install openvpn access server. is this the correct version. I want to have a GUI version . can you guide me to steps followed ?
4. portforward raspberry pi ip to which port ?


I guess I need to use duckdns somewhere to keep my ip updated. how can i do it ? Is the rest of the steps correct ?

I am using Debian, if you don't have static IP, use DO or AWS for reverse tunnel (you get static IP here)
But then I am not sure about OPENVPN, Wireguard works well.

- The 1st thing that confuses me - the OPENVPN server on Raspberry Pi is connected to your home {India} router or to your overseas home router.
- Is there any way to know my residential [India] JIO router's IP address from overseas?
- also what about DD-wrt routers? Can I not use DDNS with a domain name?

You will have setup Wireguard server on Raspberry Pi at your home in India, Jio uses CGNAT, you will have to setup a reverse tunnel or try Tailscale
