vpn router firmware vs others

hi,

I have a linksys wrt1900acs with expressvpn firmware, eveything is ok but it is not the cheapest one. So Today I saw a great deal on nordvpn and even more on the newest vpn, surfshark. Im a beginner in that so Ive read a bit on it but it seems only expressvpn has their own firmware, so everything is easy, we can change the servers in second, just click on the new country and thats it. So could you confirm me that others , we need to install a dd wrt firmware or another one and to change server, we need to enter a new configuration and data every time??
