Slow download from server using openvpn

Hi,

I’m having some issue with the speed of download using openvpn, the upload on my server side is 35Mo/s so it’s not a bandwith issue.

Here is my config:
- server side: i have a Hp proliant Gen 8 installed with OMV and openvpn as a pluggin. Server is connected to my internet box with ethernet (i have the right speed via eternet from my PC to my server for example)

- client side: iphone/ipad with openvpn app.

Some test i have made:
- i have tested my real upload speed using gdrive by uploading a file directly from my PC, i had 35Mo/s
- i have tested the bandwith from my phone directly on my network, i have 15Mo/s, the bottleneck is the wifi.
- i have tested a feature of my box that let me share files that are on internet box (i dont know the protocol behind that), i have 7Mo/s from my phone using 4G (i think the max speed then)

So as you can see i have «high » speed on all my tests and i know where the bottleneck is.

However when i m trying to download from my server outside my network via my iphone on 4G i’m only at 2Mo/s (not enough to see hd movies in streaming).

I have read some threads about the config but i’m not sure if modified the config file as i should since nothing really happened...

Please help me enjoy my server content everywhere 😁

What is your ISP advertised speed .. try http://speedof.me

I’m using usenet so much more reliable that internet speed test, coupled to gdrive and it gives me the right figures.

Up: 35Mo/s, Down: 60Mo/s

Inalready read that but i’m not sure how the config works in ios, should i modify only .conf file or rather the .openvpn?

Same in OMV putting paramaters in the box on OMV interface is enough?

All I can tell you is that openvpn does not throttle ..
it will run exactly as fast as it can on what ever you run it on.

Edit: Provided you have setup your network and openvpn correctly.

I have tried your link but nothing works for me...

I have done some more extensive test with iperf3 that confirms all my bandwidth:
-Server - PC in Ethernet without OpenVpn : 930Mbps
-Server - IOS in wifi without OpenVpn : 185Mbps (bottleneck Wifi ac)
-Server - PC in Ethernet with OpenVpn : 920Mbps (i'm not sure to understand this the bottle neck should be the UP from my ISP no?)
-Server - IOS in wifi with OpenVpn : 170Mps (same remark as above, however it would be the DOWN from my mobile ISP in this case since my UP from my home ISP is higher than my DOWN mobile ISP)
-Server - IOS in 4G with OpenVpn : 8Mbps

So I have two question:
1/ From my above test, when i use OpenVPn shouldn't i be limited by my UP from my IPS even if i'm in Wifi?
2/ Issue seems focused on my IOS device, i have use the same .opvpn config file on both my PC and my IOS, what magical option should i use on IOS?

to follow up on my issue, i have been using FTP protocol instead of SMB to download/stream my videos, it seems i have gained 1MB/s, while it's not huge, now the stream doesnt have any lag!

So i'm half happy.

I have also compare SMB and FTP speed on this config:
Server - IOS in wifi: FTP is 30.5MB/s while SMB only 17MB/s!
FTP protocol seems to max out my wifi (ac)!

Now i'm still trying to figuring out how i could achieve this performance over my VPN...

@Admin, could you transfer my post to the IOS section? thank you.

From what you have posted it seems to be clear that the problem is due to 4G, openvpn is working as well as can be expected.

Nope.

Like i said, speedtest on 4G is 60MB/s...

The suality doesnt seem in line with the suality of the information since the bandwidth of the 4G was mentionned on the first post...

Nope so i have verified 7Mo/s bandwidth against 2Mo/s from my server.

There is currently a discussion regarding speed problems on the users mailing list:

I have also done a new test, acess my FTP directly from putside my network without the vpn, i max out my 4G and even habing betger result that my test of 7Mo/s.
I’m having 10Mo/s.

So definitely a configuration issue with openvpn but can’t figure it out...

I have read your user mailing list discussion, he seems to have the same issue but no resolution yet.

There is no resolution because it is not within the scope of openvpn.

Basically, you can try using --fragment & --mssfix to see if openvpn can be tailored to your network.

Ok i’ll try that

Why do you said it’s not in openvpn scope? What would let you think that? What should i investigate?
