I am using my android hotspot on my phone to connect my firestick (kodi) and stream away - I downloaded expressvpn to my phone to stop my data from be throttled and since this does not allow my firestick to detect the network, I understood that I could add the firestick to the network by using OpenVPN and importing the .ovpn to the firestick. am I wrong? if not, can someone help me accomplish this?

I would suggest you reset your internet settings or hotspot settings and then try again to configure it again. And other than that try and ask ExpressVPN support staff.
