Use OpenVPN over Public WiFi

This is essentially a question about how Open VPN works when using it with IOS on a Public WiFi. I have OpenVPN connect installed on my IOS devices and OpenVPN activated on my Linksys 3200ACM Router. I'm pretty happy with the capabilities from my and IOS while at home. What I am not clear about though is how this works while using a Public WifI (ie Starbucks). Is there a link that explains how best to use OpenVPN over public Wifi? Should I use OpenVPN Connect, OpenVPN Client, or another options (ie a purchased service).
