leakage when using OpenVPN???

Hi,
I use OpenVPN on my android TV box. I log on OpenVPN as soon as I turn the box on. One thing I noticed is that after I used some apps (that access the internet) and went to "settings" (again, Android device) to see data usage, I would see "OpenVPN" used ~1GB data, whereas those other apps used a small <1Mb data. Is this some kind of leakage?
I went on to dnsleaktest.com, and only saw the urls of the OpemVPN providers (with one time exception of a Google url) (my ISP is ATT), so here there is no sign of leakage.
I also tried to set my DNS as static (127.0.0.1) but the problem persists.
Why would those apps still have data usage? would this usage beat the purpose of VPN?
Thanks
