OpenVPN to Hide IP Address

I installed OpenVPN as a server on my DD-WRT router and tested it and I'm able to connect to the VPN while i'm away. I'm new to VPN's and how they work and I'm not sure if my setup is working correctly.
Here is a diagram of what my home setup looks like (https://drive.google.com/open?id=1B3X5c ... authuser=0) and what I'm trying to do is protect my internet browsing but also browse anonymously and get past country restrictions and that's what I thought VPN's did? The issue that I'm having is that when I connect to the VPN my IP address that I get when I go to Google and type in what is my IP is still the same, and therefore I don't think the VPN is hiding my identity or changing my country location.
Is this how the VPN is supposed to work? And if so, how do I get it to make my browsing anonymous and get past country restriction?
Thank you in advance for your thoughts.
