windows phone 8.1

Post by cudiaco » Mon Apr 14, 2014 3:09 pm

Hi everyone,

It appears that Microsoft is finally including support for IPSec VPNs and some form of SSL VPN on their just released windows phone 8.1 platform.

Will there be a port of OpenVPN connect on WP8.1?

Cheers

I was wondering that as well. OpenVPN on Windows Phone would be great!

There are already a bunch of clients available, like Juniper.

Read more about it here:

If you need a beta tester, I'd gladly offer my help.

Kind regards,
Peter

Does anyone know where I can find documentation on how to create a Windows phone 8.1 client? I can research the Windows phone coding requirements so I'm looking for how to utilize the OpenVpn client and integrate it onto the Windows phone platform.

Not having OpenVPN for WP is what stopped me from getting a WP.

I think that's the wrong thinking.

Not having OpenVPN for Windows Phone is what's making me move away from OpenVPN. I'm not going to drop what revealed itself to be a great mobile platform that fits all my other needs perfectly because of a piece of software that can be easily replaced by reasonable alternatives.

I'd much rather use OpenVPN, but I'm not in the mood to make a very expensive decision (all my team's phones) based on its availability when I have feasable alternatives.

You should be blaming Microsoft for this. It's not even possible to create an OpenVPN client on Windows Phone, or even as a universal app. Microsoft doesn't provide any API function for this at all, and even if you created some kind of hack, they'd probably ban it from the store because they don't permit tunneling through third party apps.

Actually, everything you said is either wrong because of ignorance or a lie. Not only there is actually an API for that, but also there is support for different VPN tunnels and more can be added directly from the store. Even more so, there are about a dozen apps for VPN tunneling, not only for traffic anonymizing VPNs, but also clients for Juniper and Cisco's VPN appliances. I even said in my previous post that I had feasable alternatives, which actually implies that there are tunnel solutions for WP8 and immediately makes your post untrue but you chose to ignore it to spread FUD. There was even a VPN client for WP7 on the store. The only thing that happened with WP8x that made it difficult to port OpenVPN was the removal of the old, already deprecated API, leaving only the new one (hence a WP7 version existing but not a WP8).
