Connection Errors with iPad 1st Gen

Hi there!
I have a VPN provider that uses OprnVPN to access its networks.
Since the latest OpenVPN App update (which I can't install on my 1st Gen iPad) I can't connect to any VPN server frpm my iPad. I get the following error:
"Client exception in transport_recv_excode: PolarSSL: SSL read error : SSL - Verification of the message MAC failed"
I don't think it's a server error, as it works fine with my iPhone 4S (using the latest App).
Is it because I can't install the latest software on my iPad?
